As every year, it’s the first days of Winter. Unfortunately the winter this year is changeable and not everybody likes it… Also today we celebrate the anniversary of the first public presentations of e-bUW, which took place on the 21st Dec. 2007. Yes, it has been three years since Vice-Rector prof. dr hab. Wojciech Tygielski clicked for the first time, opening the e-bUW webpage. This is also the day when we present to our Dear Readers the first issues of “Kurier Warszawski”. “Kurier Warszawski” was the information newspaper published from 1821 to 1939. This is “the mine of everyday social live” of those times and the inestimable historical source. Yes, this one of the most precious Warsaw newspapers is finally available on the Web – the first issues just before Christmas!

The first journal has already been digitized within the ongoing project “NUKAT – Digital Information Highway“ financed with the European Funds Innovative Economy and is available in e-bUW. The journal „Nowy Pamiętnik Warszawski : [dziennik historyczny, polityczny, tudzież nauk i umiejętności]” was founded in the times when Warsaw was under Prussian rule by Franciszek Ksawery Dmochowski, earned on the field of literature, participant in the Kosciuszko Insurrection. This literary and politico-social journal during the five years of its existence (1801-1805) played an important and stimulating role in the intellectual life by the time of Prussian rule. e-bUW Nets old journals and newspapers

In the ongoing project „NUKAT – Digital Information Highway” financed with the EU grant the University of Warsaw Library is going to scan and put in its digital library (e-bUW) selected titles from its valuable collection of 19th century journals and newspapers. Three million scans will be converted to DjVu presentations forty thousand of which will be added to e-bUW before the end of 2012. Publications to be scanned involve “Kurier Warszawski”, “Gazeta Warszawska”, Korespondent Warszawski” and 106 other titles (see titles here). Only Library holdings will be scanned and gaps in holdings will not be filled. In the case of title-changing publications holdings for all related titles will be scanned.

The four hundredth publication in DLF comes from e-bUW!

The four hundredth publication in the Digital Library Federation: “on May 24th 2010 around 10:20 the total number of publications in Polish digital libraries joint to the Digital Library Federation exceeded 400 000” It is our pleasure to inform that the four hundredth publication comes from the e-bUW collection – it is “Mosty-Nasze Słowo : pismo Żydowskiej Partii Robotniczej” no 44 from 1949” .

New collection

You are invited to use the digital collection „Literature for scientific minds”. Monuments of Polish writing concerning astronomy, chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology and Earth science will be successively presented. The collection will contain early imprints, books and journals from the University of Warsaw Library holdings. Journals will be digitised as part of a NUKAT project held in the Library - Digital Information Highway, funded from the Innovative Economy Programme sources. The scientific supervisor of the collection is Professor Andrzej Kajetan Wróblewski.

e-bUW holdings in the testing version of Europeana

The program of celebrations of Charles Darwin anniversaries (the year 2009 is the bicentennial of Darwin’s birthday, and sesquicentennial of publication of his book “The Origin of Species”)includes among others lectures, conferences, exhibitions, publications and concerts.

Software update finished

Digital Library dLibra engine has been upgraded to the 4.0 version. This version introduces some changes to the webpage - for example there is now a builtin djvu java plugin. Also, the distributed searches will be now handled by Digital Libraries Federation's webpage.
